Clapham Leisure Centre hosted a master class for St Mary’s Roman Catholic Primary School, in Lockington Road, Battersea, led by Olympian Tom Daley
Daley, the current 10m platform world champion, provided technical diving instruction to advanced swimmers in the class. He then answered questions from the pupils and also from those sent in via social media.
The Q&A session was streamed live over Facebook and Instagram. The visit on Tuesday, November 7, took place after leisure centre staff, led by swim lead Lucy Ives, recorded the highest course numbers for the Tom Daley Diving Academy Splash Down courses.
Daley, who lives in Southwark, said: “I’m really excited to be here at Clapham Leisure Centre and to meet some of the local children.”
When asked what advice he would give to children thinking of taking up diving, he said: “There are lots of locations available, you don’t need a pool with diving boards.
“You can come to a pool like Clapham Leisure Centre, where you’re learning stuff off poolside, learning the basics, and then when you get to a certain level you can transfer to somewhere with diving boards.”
GLL, the charitable social enterprise that operates Better leisure centres, created the academy in partnership with Daley with the aim of exposing as many individuals as possible to diving, regardless of age and ability. The Splash Down courses provide children with the diving fundamentals required to be an Olympic champion.
The pupils gain vital experience, skills, and confidence to develop their diving technique from the side of the pool. The academy also supports the identification and development of young, talented divers.
