Theatre: Romeo and Juliet, Mountview Theatre SE15

A famous drama school is opening its new season in a new home with a Shakespearian classic.

The Mountview drama school is putting on a performance of the tragedy Romeo and Juliet which will run from October 3-10 at its new theatre in Peckham.

Mountview has two purpose-built theatres, the 200-seat Mountview Theatre and the 80-seat Backstage Theatre.

Mountview’s 3rd year acting students have been hard at work in rehearsals for Romeo and Juliet, William Shakespeare’s greatest tragedy and the world’s most famous love story.

Romeo and Juliet will do anything to be together but the fates have other plans for these star-crossed lovers who cannot escape their tragic destiny.

The show’s director, Stephen Jameson, Mountview’s artistic director and principal, has been putting the students through their paces since term started at the beginning of September.

He said: “For this particular production of Romeo and Juliet, we have two casts who will perform in rotation.

“This means two actors for each role and we rehearse with both casts together at the same time as we build up ready for the first performance.

“It is a brilliant process as the actors all learn from one another’s performances as much as from their tutors and directors and it means double the energy and enthusiasm in the rehearsal room.

“It is fantastic to have two dedicated theatre spaces of our very own in which to stage our productions and I am thrilled to be announcing such a varied autumn season of shows in our new Peckham home.

“We are delighted to be part of such a vibrant cultural community in Southwark and relish the opportunity to share what we do with our neighbours in South London.”
