Swapping their test tubes for trainers – researchers raise money for cancer research

A single lap around the park can make all the difference in the quest for a cancer cure.
A 13-strong team, many of them from south London, will be taking the fight against cancer out of the hospital and into the park.
The group will swap running clinical trials for running the 5k Race for Life in Regent’s Park on May 18.
And for the first time in the event’s history, a man is on the team.
Connor McAlpine will be joining his University College London colleagues Samantha Whinn from Stockwell, Mairead Cullen from Lewisham, Philippa Nutkins from Herne Hill and Emma Hinsworth and Faustine Laval from Tooting.
Cancer Research UK Senior Research Nurse and team captain Emma Hainsworth said: “The team are all involved in running clinical trials so we see first-hand how research benefits patients. And we’re aware that much of the funding for trials comes from events like Race for Life.
“We’d love it if others got a team together too and joined one of the many Race for Life events around London this summer.”
Cancer Research UK’s Race for Life is a series of 5k, 10k, Pretty Muddy and Pretty Muddy Kids events which together raise millions of pounds every year to fund crucial research.
Thanks to its supporters, the charity was able to spend nearly £142 million last year in London alone on some of the UK’s leading scientific and clinical research.
Cancer Research UK’s Event Manager for Regent’s Park Dearbhla Cormacain said: “We’re urging mums, dads, nans, grandpas, brothers, sisters, friends and workmates to show their support by joining the Race for Life.
Ms Cormacain added: “Every day, 90 people are diagnosed with cancer in London.”
One in two people in the UK will be diagnosed with cancer at some point during their life but survival in the UK has doubled since the early 1970s.
