Surrey have signed up South African leg-spinner Imran Tahir for the entirety of this season’s T20 Blast, which gets underway on July 19, against Essex at Chelmsford.
Tahir, who has been named in his country’s squad for the upcoming World Cup, becomes the Oval outfit’s second overseas signing for the 2019 Blast along with the big-hitting Australian opener Aaron Finch, who will return for a fourth T20 stint with Surrey.
Tahir was one of the leading bowlers in this year’s Indian Premier League, with 26 wickets – the most in the competition – at an average of 16.57, which helped Chennai Super Kings reach the final.
The leg-spinner, who was the number one ranked bowler in the world in the shortest format in 2017, said: “I’m always looking for new and exciting opportunities. That’s how I see the chance to play with one of the most talented playing groups in county cricket.
“When I heard Alec Stewart had asked after me, it was an easy decision. Surrey are a massive club and it will be great if I can contribute to helping them win another trophy this summer at the Kia Oval.”
Stewart, Surrey’s director of cricket, added: “Imran is a proven match winner and with his vast experience of international, county and franchise cricket will be a huge asset to us.”
