Running for Demelza: Children and adults take part in Royal Riverside Run at Royal Arsenal Riverside development

Most kids would rather be glued to a computer game than walk a couple of feet.

But hundreds took part in a sponsored run – involving thousands of steps – for children’s hospice Demelza.

Runners challenged themselves to either a 5km or 10km run that started and finished at Royal Arsenal Riverside development, with children also encouraged able to take part in a one mile fun run.

Runners and sponsors of the event, including Berkeley, have raised more than £1,000.

They ran from Royal Arsenal Riverside development before heading out across the Ridgeway, over to North Thamesmead and coming back along the riverbank to finish at Royal Arsenal’s No 1 Street.

Spectators were able to enjoy the Royal Arsenal Riverside Explore (RARE) farmers market – which provided a range of local produce and craft stalls, as well as home-made jam and soap from pupils at Alexander McLeod Primary School.

Steven Nodwell from Royal Resistance said: “We were delighted to have so many people come down and get active on September 28.

“Fitness is such an important part of a healthy lifestyle and we hope that this run can inspire people of all ages to stay active – what better reason to don your trainers than supporting a charity like Demelza.”

Carolina Correia, community development specialist from Berkeley East Thames said: “It was fantastic to have so many children and adults taking part in the Royal Riverside Run.

“There was a great atmosphere and most importantly, we raised money for an incredible charity.

“We work very closely with Demelza and have seen first hand how the work they do changes lives – the money raised will help provide invaluable care for young children with terminal conditions.”
