Pupils inspired by children’s author

Children’s author Michael Rosen gave readings of his own work and joined a poetry writing workshop at Fircroft Primary School

A children’s author known for his distinctive storytelling wowed pupils during a reading this month.

Michael Rosen, 71, is a former Children’s Laureate who is regularly heard on BBC Radio 4.

He treated youngsters to recitals of Chocolate Cake, We’re going on a Bear Hunt and Little Rabbit Foo Foo.

Year 5 and 6 pupils at Fircroft Primary School, in Fircroft Road, Tooting, also took part in a poetry writing workshop, with Mr Rosen reading out a number of examples of their work.

Pupil Nicholas Parker, 10, “nearly fainted” with excitement when Mr Rosen arrived.

He said: “He is one of my favourite authors. I loved his visit and was inspired to write my own poems at home.”

Headteacher Anne Wilson said she was incredibly grateful Mr Rosen visited the school on October 5.

She said: “There was a wonderful buzz after he left. “Visits such as these are a fun and engaging way to encourage our pupils to develop their poetry skills, embed a love of reading for pleasure and enthuse pupils in their own writing.”

Children were also given the chance to take a lasting memory of the day, with Mr Rosen spending two hours signing copies of his work.
