Nicky Ajose: I would have matched Taylor and Grant’s goal total if I’d had run of Charlton Athletic games

BY RICHARD CAWLEY

Nicky Ajose reckons he could have hit the same kind of goal total as Lyle Taylor or Karlan Grant if he had been given a run in Charlton’s team this season.

The 27-year-old forward came off the bench in midweek to score the second goal in the win over Portsmouth.

It was Ajose’s first League One goal since he bagged the winner at Fratton Park in April.

This season the former Manchester United and Swindon Town marksman has made just six appearances in the league – and has started just once since the start of September.

Asked about playing a waiting game behind Grant and Taylor – who have 11 and 12 goals respectively – Ajose said: “The boys have done well. I would have liked to have played more minutes during the games – it seems everyone else has been rotating, even during games and coming on.

“I believe if I played 20 straight games and the chances we’ve created I would’ve scored the same amount of goals.

“But the boys have done well, I’m pleased for them. All I can do is try and train well and when the opportunity comes try and take it, see what happens.”

Ajosé worked hard when he came on at Portsmouth. Confidence is a fragile thing. He scored 26 in 35 at Swindon so he can do it.
