Nesta Guinness-Walker on opening his goal account for AFC Wimbledon – and why edge was taken off his celebrations
AFC Wimbledon wing-back Nesta Guinness-Walker opened his account for the Dons in style – but it was soured by Ipswich Town’s late fightback to steal all three points.
The Dons were in the ascendancy for the opening period, shackling their opponents’ attacking threat well and they took the lead after superb work from Michael Folivi saw him lay the ball to Guinness-Walker, the summer signing producing a first-time arrow rising into the top right-hand corner.
But late goals from James Norwood and substitute Kayden Jackson condemned Wimbledon to a harsh defeat after a battling away performance.
The Dons have taken one point from a possible 12 and are 20th in the early League One standings.
“It’s great for me to get that goal,” said Guinness-Walker, 19, when discussing his first professional strike. “But the bigger picture here is we’ve dropped three points.
“The lads did well to stay in the game for that long. We were on top for the large majority of the game. It’s just a shame that it’s ended like that.”
Dons manager Wally Downes has spoken of how he has been pleased with parts of performances in this season’s early exchanges, but it was down to his team to put the two halves together for a perfect 90 minutes – there were signs of that coming to fruition until the visitors staged their late fightback.
“Like the gaffer said, there are a lot of positives to take,” said the Dons wing-back. “We did well for 80 minutes. We were in the game and 1-0 up for quite a long period of the game. Saturday is another tough match – we’ve got to travel up to Sunderland.
“We’ll take the positives into the game and hopefully we’ll have a better result there.”
