Millwall striker Matt Smith on return to Leeds United: Time at Elland Road established me as a Championship striker

BY RICHARD CAWLEY

Matt Smith is looking forward to facing his former club Leeds United tomorrow night – and reckons his switch to the Yorkshire giants established him as a Championship striker.

The 30-year-old could lead the Lions’ attack at Elland Road.

Smith spent 15 months on the books of Leeds before joining Fulham in September 2014.

“I’m really looking forward to it,” he said. “I love playing at Elland Road. It was a home ground that I had a lot of success at. It will be a great atmosphere and two teams near the top of the table.

“It was quite an up and down year [he had at Leeds] from an ownership perspective. We had quite a few off-the-field issues when I was there. But it’s a huge club with huge tradition.

“I was only there for a season but managed to get myself 14 goals. That’s what catapulted my Championship career.

“Getting that number of goals in my first season in the Championship is something I’ll never forget. They have got a fierce fanbase.”
