Millwall boss: We will need to invest in summer to take club forward

By Richard Cawley

Neil Harris reckons Millwall face a big summer in the transfer market – pointing out that there needs to be further investment in their squad to improve upon this season’s impressing Championship campaign.

The Lions lost 2-0 at Middlesbrough today and that has all but ended their hopes of reaching the play-offs.

They need to beat Aston Villa on the final day and hope for a nine-goal swing on Derby County. If Preston North End win their remaining fixture then they could not be caught by the South Londoners.

Millwall have had a tough finish to the campaign as they faced Sheffield United away followed by Fulham, who ended Millwall’s 17-game unbeaten run last weekend.

“If you look at the quality of the top-six at the moment and the teams outside it, we are one of the teams knocking on the door but not quite getting there,” said Harris. “It is a tough summer for us. We’ve got to be better than this year.

“If we want to move forward we have got to improve our squad, that’s for sure. We have been excellent against the majority of the teams but when we have played the top six on the road and at home, like Fulham, we have found it difficult.

“If we want to improve as a club we need to invest in our squad.

“We know what we have achieved up to the last two games has been miraculous. We have earned the right after the last 17 games to be a little bit disappointed by the last two performances.

“I don’t think we created enough all game. We didn’t win enough first contacts or second contacts. We fell short in most areas. We got beaten by the bottom team. It is a good reality check for all of us.

“I’m disappointed with the goals – no disgrace coming and getting beaten at Middlesbrough, who are an excellent side. The two goals we gave away, they were gifts.”
