Neil Harris felt Ben Thompson was Millwall’s standout performer in Saturday’s 3-1 loss to Norwich City – and has revealed that Ryan Leonard has been struggling with injury.
Club-record signing Leonard was on the bench at the weekend with Thompson and Shaun Williams taking the two central midfield slots.
“I feel like I’ve got four central midfielders who have all done well since Christmas,” said Lions boss Harris. “They’ve all had good games but also had games where they’ve not been quite as good as the standards they have set in others.
“Different games need different players. I really wanted to play Ben at the weekend and his performance off the bench [against Preston at The Den] merited a start. It was a game where we needed good shape and discipline, I thought Shaun would be his best parner.
“Ben Thompson was outstanding. He was the best Millwall player on the pitch, if not the best player on the pitch. He showed the characteristics we need at this stage of the season.
“Lenny has carried a bit of a knee problem and he wasn’t going to play against Hull [last Tuesday]. But he had to step in at right-back because of Mahlon Romeo’s illness.
“He was struggling but when he was asked he didn’t shirk the challenge.”
