Lee Bowyer disappointed after Charlton return from Oakwell with just a point

BY LOUIS MENDEZ

Charlton chief Lee Bowyer is disappointed to be returning from Oakwell with just a point after Lyle Taylor’s late penalty meant in ended all-square against Barnsley.

The Tykes had gone into a first-half lead through Cauley Woodrow’s long-range volley, before they were pegged back by Conor Gallagher.

Conor Chaplain edged the hosts back in front shortly after the interval but Taylor grabbed his third goal in three games from the spot two minutes from time as Gallagher was felled in the area.

“It’s crazy, I just said to the players that I’m a bit disappointed with the point,” said Bowyer, as his side continued their unbeaten start to the Championship season.

“We had two really good chances to take the lead and then they scored a great goal with a great strike, you can’t defend that. Second-half, we were probably the better side. They were hitting us on the break every now and then. Chuks went through one v one and the keeper made a great save. Overall, the neutral would probably say a draw was fair but I’m a bit disappointed. But, it’s a good point.

“They worked so hard. We didn’t move the ball as well today as we normally would but we did have a game plan. It was to try and hurt them down the sides and in behind because their full-backs get forward so much and leave themselves vulnerable at the back.

“I didn’t fancy Lyle to score, for the first time ever when he was walking up I didn’t fancy him to score – but he did. He’s so calm in that situation, he’s the person you’d want to be taking the penalty.”
