Kids are going ‘fizz free’ and drinking water instead as part of a health campaign in Southwark

Pupils have been getting fizzically fit by cutting out carbonated drinks.
Youngsters at Cobourg Primary School in Cobourg Road, Bermondsey have been drinking water at school instead of the sugary E-numbers they once guzzled.
And they have been hearing from Councillor Evelyn Akoto, cabinet member for public health, about the benefits.
Schools in Southwark have taken up the challenge to go ‘fizz free’ this month at the start of Fizz Free February.
The campaign was devised by Southwark but has spread to councils, primary schools and community groups across the country but also as far as New Zealand.
Cllr Akoto said: “We’re so pleased primary schools around the borough and around the country have taken on the importance of drinking more water.
“Cola and other drinks can contain up to 10 teaspoons of sugar. The total recommended amount of sugar per day is just six teaspoons. Really, the best option is for everyone to be more aware of hidden sugar. In the longer-term, our individual choices support Southwark and other communities in tackling childhood obesity. Everyone should have the best chance to lead a healthier life.”
