Millwall manager Neil Harris has admitted that Lee Gregory has a “big decision” to make over his future – with the in-form striker set to be out of contract in the summer.
The Dubious Goals Committee have awarded the 30-year-old the goal from last month’s EFL Cup defeat to Fulham.
It increases Gregory’s haul for the campaign to seven and he has got 69 in 203 matches since signing from Halifax Town in June 2014.
Harris is more than happy with the Sheffield man’s scoring ratio: “It’s exceptional because we ask our strikers to work hard and play for the team – before they play for themselves. Lee certainly does that.
“His tireless running doesn’t always get rewards.
“It is harder at this level for centre-forwards to score goals unless a team is making hundreds of chances. Lee’s record in a Millwall shirt is very, very impressive.
“He leads the line with performances, pace and power. He was part of us getting out of League One – his goal return was fantastic there for two seasons.
“He scored goals in the Championship last year and we’re hoping he gets past that tally this season because of the experience he has got of it.
“It is a big year for him. We’re fully aware it is the last year of his contract.
“We’d love him to stay longer but it is a big decision on your future when you get to 30 in terms of playing and location.
“We’ll just have to see how that one unfolds in the coming weeks and months. At the moment his form is excellent. He’s certainly playing some of his best football in a Millwall shirt in the Championship.”
Millwall have a number of players due to be free agents at the end of June.
All their goalkeepers are set to be out of contract. Jordan Archer missed out on the latest Scotland squad after losing his number one berth to Ben Amos, who is on a season-long loan from Bolton.
Centre-back Byron Webster, Northern Ireland international Shane Ferguson and striker Tom Elliott are others in the same contractual boat.
“The club is busy behind the scenes working on things,” said Harris.
“There will be players in the last year of their contract who we won’t be in contract negotiations with at the moment – either because the players aren’t interested in doing it or they aren’t playing regularly.
Naturally there will be more patience with that to see if they get more time, or if we want to extend if they are not regularly playing for us.
“Some are still under contract past this season and we’d like to extend their stays with us.”
