Ice-hockey: Adam Wood on hitting 100-point mark for Streatham
Streatham utility man Adam Wood says they must start building for a NIHLS1 play-off push after a mixed weekend.
The Redhawks host title-chasing Peterborough Phantoms on Saturday before heading down the A2 to rivals Invicta Dynamos the following night.
Jeremy Cornish’s side had a 4-1 win over Milton Keynes Thunder followed by a 7-4 defeat to the Raiders on Sunday night – despite a spirited fightback late on.
“The standings seem somewhat set in place now, said Wood, 28. “It’s just really important for us to get some momentum going and play good hockey leading in to the play-offs.
“Peterborough will always be a tough team to beat, but we have proven this season that we can skate with them and any other team in the league.”
The former Cardiff Devils player insists they must start playing for the full 60 minutes to start getting results.
“We showed some real character and determination to start a comeback against the Raiders but putting ourselves in that position in the first place isn’t acceptable.
“All year we’ve said how we need to play for the full 60 minutes and on Sunday we only played for 20.
“We need to take that final 20 minutes into training this week and then again next weekend.”
The alternate captain expressed his satisfaction at getting revenge over Thunder after losing to them 4-1 the weekend before.
“We were all really pleased to get the win over MK,” said Wood.
“We needed to bounce back after our performance from the week before.”
Wood picked up three assists in the victory on Saturday to move him on to 102 points during his time with the South London club.
“When I heard that I was one point away from 100, I expected it to take weeks to get there but getting three assists that game was definitely helpful,” he said.
“It’s taken me long enough but still feels really good to put up those points for the club. I love playing here and I’m glad I can contribute.”
