Durham 1 Millwall Lionesses 0 – Roberts breaks down stubborn Lions
A piece of magic from Emily Roberts was the difference as Durham recorded a comfortable victory over a stubborn Millwall side.
The hosts dominated for long periods but couldn’t find a way through until the 69th minute when the winger struck.
The first opportunity arrived on 14 minutes when neat link up play involving Lisa Robertson and Roberts ending with the former drilling a shot from the edge of the area which was held by Rhiannon Stewart.
Stewart then produced a stunning one handed diving save to deny Roberts who had unleashed a drive from 20 yards.
The Millwall keeper had to be alert right on the stroke of half time when a cross from Beth Hepple caused mayhem and Stewart needed to claw the ball off the line.
The hosts continued to dominate after the break with Zoe Ness volleying towards goal from the edge of the area but it was straight down the throat of Stewart on 54 minutes.
Only two minutes later and Georgia Robert made two last ditch challenges to deny first Ness and then Roberts.
Durham finally broke the deadlock on 69 minutes through Roberts. It was a goal worthy of winning any game as she beat three defenders before curling a superb effort into the top corner.
A well worked corner routine from the visitors ended with Ravenscroft firing high over the bar with just under 15 minutes remaining.
Durham were able to see the remainder of the game out to keep their hopes of finishing second alive.
