Dulwich Runners win promotion to the top flight of the Surrey Cross Country League

BY JONATHAN WHITTAKER

Dulwich will be up against Hercules Wimbledon and Herne Hill Harriers next season after another excellent team display at Lloyd Park to win promotion to the top flight of the Surrey Cross Country League.

Dulwich withstood a strong effort from Fulham to finish 75 points ahead of their west London rivals to seal the runners-up spot behind Clapham Chasers.

Ed Chuck was again one of the frontrunners and enjoyed a hard-fought battle with the eventual individual champion, Tim Haughian, of Stragglers, to finish in second place both on the day and in the overall championship.

Andy Bond (eighth) has likewise enjoyed a terrific season and scored his fourth consecutive top-10 finish to win him an overall podium place and first place in the V40 category.

Not far behind was Jack Ramm (12th), who had one of his best ever runs in a Dulwich vest.

Then came an excellent display of packing with a constant stream of finishers – Steve Davies (26th), Alastair Locke (28th), Tim Bowen (30th), Daniel Mann (33rd), Wayne Lashley (34th), Paul Devine (36th) and Edward Harper (42nd) completed the A team.

It was backed up by another exemplary B team display, with Tony Tuohy enjoying a break from his indoor track exploits, and a well-fought three-way battle between Andrea Ceccolini, Jonny Hough and Justin Siderfin. Hugh Balfour also had another strong run to finish third overall in the V60 championships.

In the third ladies’ race of the season at Richmond Park, Dulwich moved above Reigate into 13th place with a good all-round display. Marta Miaskiewicz was first finisher for Dulwich in 36th.

Ange Norris (68th) just edged out Tess Bright (70th) before another short gap to Michelle Lennon (75th) and Ola Balme (79th) as the final A team scorers.

The B team were again not far behind with excellent runs from Anna Thomas (88th), Yvette Dore (102nd), Belinda Cottrill (104th), Eleanor Simmons (109th) and Lucy Clapp (129th).

On Sunday, Clare Elms set her second W55 age group world record of 2019 with a 4:53 1,500m run at the Lea Valley Indoor Track taking almost three seconds off the previous record. Another superb well-paced run from Elms, to add to the mile record bagged last month.
