Wally Downes has called on AFC Wimbledon’s fans to stick with his side as they head to Luton Town tonight.
The Hatters are on the verge of promotion to the Championship and bounced back from a 3-1 defeat at Charlton – which ended a 28-game unbeaten league run – to win 3-0 at Accrington Stanley on Saturday. The Dons are in dire need of the points at Kenilworth Road, Good Friday’s 1-1 draw with Bristol Rovers still leaving them a point adrift of safety with just three matches to go.
Luton have a daunting record on their home turf – winning 15 and drawing six of their 21 League One games.
Downes said: “It’s a great opportunity for us to go and test ourselves against the best.
“Let’s hope we go there and upset the party. We need the win, they need the win, it’s a good game in hand.
“I hope the fans will stick with us because we are going to Luton and we want to win the game. If we win the game we come back here and we go again. We are going to need them.
“I’m disappointed that we didn’t see it out for the three points [against Bristol Rovers] because I felt that we applied ourselves and just lacked a little bit of quality in their half with the ball. We had the opportunity to have the ball in their half, circulate it, and do better on the ball, but it didn’t happen.
“To progress as a team – we are a young team – we have to see it out all the way through. I’ve said it before – you don’t get paid at half-time.They came down the other end, a little bit of magic, and a very good goal to deny us.”
