Croydon’s Sunny Edwards wins the IBF international super-fly title
BY RICHARD CAWLEY
Sunny Edwards is the new IBF international super-flyweight champion after a wide points win over Hiram Gallardo at Greenwich’s 02 Arena tonight.
The Croydon fighter was too slick for his Mexican opponent and collected the vacant belt, with all three judges scoring 99-90 9 in his favour.
Edwards pushed his record to 12-0. He was already the WBO European champion and now adds another strap to his collection.
It never looked like he would inflict a stoppage loss on Gallardo, who seemed unfortunate to get a count in the second round. It looked more like the visiting fighter had slipped to the canvas.
Edwards had no trouble landing his own shots and his lateral movement was a problem for Gallardo, who was on the front foot but being picked off by the superior boxer.
