Charlton’s Jonny Williams admits he’s missed being in the Wales fold as he’s recalled by Ryan Giggs

BY LOUIS MENDEZ

Charlton midfielder Jonny Williams hasn’t played a competitive game for the Welsh national side in nearly two years – but is delighted to be back in the international fold after being recalled to Ryan Giggs’ squad.

The 25-year-old last featured for the Dragons during a 1-0 home defeat against Ireland in October 2017 but has now been called up for the upcoming games against Azerbaijan and Belarus.

“It’s something I’ve missed, to be honest,” explained Williams, who has enjoyed an impressive start to the Championship season at The Valley.

“I probably haven’t deserved to be in it as I haven’t been playing enough recently. But it’s been hard to take not being there because it’s such a great camp to be a part of.

“We’ve got some tough games coming up after two defeats in the summer. Looking forward to that. It’s brilliant to be playing at club level, that is my main aim. Wales is just the icing on the cake.”

Williams’ Addicks teammate Tom Lockyer is also part of the 26-man squad for the duo of games in Cardiff.

The defender joined the South Londoners from Bristol Rovers in the summer and Williams says that he has been a good addition to the side.

“It’s a great signing for us,” he said.

“He’s a great lad, he gets on well with everyone. He’s a good laugh. I think he’s been very good.

“It’s his first few games in the Championship and some of the last-ditch tackles have been unbelievable.”
