Charlton boss reveals Alfie Doughty deal trigger + confirms talks with right-back

BY RICHARD CAWLEY

Charlton have extended Alfie Doughty’s contract until 2021.

The Addicks want to secure the pacey 20-year-old on a long-term deal.

Doughty was the subject of interest from Fulham during the January transfer window.

But Charlton manager Lee Bowyer has revealed that the youngster now has an extra 12 months to run on his contract.

“With Alfie there was a clause in his contract which triggers something – and we’ve triggered that,” said the Addicks boss. “So that’s another year.”

The Addicks’ director of football Steve Gallen has also made contact with Adam Matthews’ agent.

The right-back signed in September as a free agent following his release by Sunderland and is keeping Chris Solly out of the side.

“I think he’s enjoying it here and I like what he has done,” said Bowyer. “He is playing well, especially of late. His fitness is up now – you’ve got to remember he didn’t have a pre-season, so it took a little time to get up to speed.

“Steve has spoken to his agent. There have been some positive chats there.”
