Charlton boss Lee Bowyer reveals one key area of the pitch he will look to bolster in summer transfer window

Charlton Athletic will look to sign a left-back this summer – with boss Lee Bowyer admitting they lacked cover in that area until Ben Purrington’s arrival.

Purrington is set to head back to Rotherham United after this weekend’s League One play-off final.

Millers manager Paul Warne spoke last week about how the defender could still be part of his plans.

And Bowyer will wait until Charlton’s promotion fate is determined before putting plans into action.

“Ben has come in and done exceptionally well – he’s gone under the radar I think,” said the Addicks chief. “He has given us that natural balance and defensively he is very, very good.

“But we haven’t had that discussion [over his future]. He is a Rotherham player and they might want to keep him themselves and then it is out of our hands anyway.

“It is a position we need to cover because Pagey [Lewis Page] has been in and out of it this season, he has missed more than he has played. So we definitely need cover, we won’t make that mistake again.

“I thought we did have cover in Naby [Sarr] but then Pagey and Pearcey [Jason Pearce] were both injured. Sols [Chris Solly] went out there and did alright, but it is not his natural position.”
