Charlton boss Lee Bowyer admits that he’s not that fussed as his much-changed side crash out of the FA Cup
Charlton boss Lee Bowyer defended his decision to make nine changes for the FA Cup clash with Doncaster Rovers.
The Addicks were dumped out of the competition as second-half goals from Andrew Butler and John Marquis meant it was fellow League One outfit Donny who progressed to the third round of the cup.
Charlton had their chances throughout the game however were unable to find a way past visiting goalkeeper Ian Lawlor – but Bowyer denied that this was a missed opportunity for his side.
“A missed opportunity of what?” asked the Addicks boss.
“Winning the FA Cup? We’re never going to win it. There’s no missed opportunity. The opportunity that I’ve had is to give Billy Clarke and Ben Reeves minutes. We got to look at Taylor Maloney. Can he handle it? At the minute we’ve got three midfielders out injured.
“I’m sorry but if I play the side that I’ve been playing of late, if we win we go through to the next round but we have two more injuries? We’ve had crazy injuries, two shoulders in one game. Can I take that risk? We could have Man City in the next round, get beat 8-0 and then what? Lose two important people for 4-6 weeks. I’d be an idiot to do that.
“I’m really not that fussed to be honest. We’re never going to win it. We have to be realistic. I don’t think I’ve done anything wrong. I’ve made the right decision and I got to see some important things today.
“There’s been some positives out there today. Dillon was outstanding, he made some great saves. I’ve seen that I can play Anfernee Dijksteel centre-half. He was very good as well.
“I don’t think it was that bad. I think we got to have a good look at players. There’re some positives out of it. If you’d looked a month ago, none of that starting eleven starts for us. Have they done bad? I think they have done OK. There’re pros and cons out of everything. Yes, we’ve gone out the cup but I got to see players if they’re ready and play for us. Can I trust them on a Tuesday night at a horrible away day? That’s what I’ve learned from that game.”
