Charlton boss Bowyer: Sunderland will be the favourites in League One play-off final

Charlton manager Lee Bowyer reckons Sunderland will be the side expected to win next weekend’s League One play-off final.

The Addicks are heading to Wembley for the first time since 1998 after a 4-3 penalty shootout win over Doncaster last night.

And it will be a repeat of their last trip to the national stadium as the Black Cats stand in their way.

Sunderland won 1-0 on aggregate against Portsmouth to progress.

They lost 5-4 on spot-kicks to Pompey in the EFL Trophy final at Wembley at the end of March.

Bowyer said: “It’s going to be tough.

“They are probably going into it as favourites, for a couple of reasons.

“We haven’t beaten them this season. We gave them a good run at their place, with a small squad.

“Then we played them here and I thought we were better than them, and we drew.

“They’ve got the advantage they have already played at Wembley this season. That alone is an important thing for them.

“Listen, I know we’ll turn up, give everything and we’ll create chances. If we take our chances I think we’ve got a good chance of winning.

“We keep winning and with these fans behind us it is unique what we have built in a short space of time, 18 months. All of a sudden you have got the Valley full, winning constantly – we’ve just missed out on automatic promotion by three points.

“Scored loads of goals and kept loads of clean sheets. We’re very good. Sunderland aren’t just going to turn up and think it is going to be easy, because they will respect us like we will respect them.”

I have supported Charlton from afar since 1945 and the losing Cup Final with Derby County (we wuz robbed) and will be 86 on the very day we are at Wembley in the Play-Offs, so hope Lee and the lads will deliver a win as the best birthday present I could hope for…
