Charlton Athletic sign Manchester City midfielder on loan

BY RICHARD CAWLEY

Charlton have boosted their midfield options with the signing of Manchester City midfielder Matt Smith.

The 20-year-old had been on loan at QPR in the first half of the Championship season and made eight league appearances, two of those starts.

The Wales international has cut short his stay in west London to make the switch to SE7.

Smith becomes the third addition of the transfer window for Charlton. They wrapped up a post-midnight raid for Sunderland’s Aiden McGeady as we headed towards the deadline cut off and took Aston Villa’s Andre Green soon after trading opened again this month.

Smith had a successful loan at FC Twente last season as they won the Eerste Divisie.

He has been with City since the age of 14 and signed a long-term contract in April. Smith’s form for FC Twente saw him win senior international recognition last season.
