Charlton Athletic set to sign Preston keeper on loan

BY RICHARD CAWLEY

Charlton Athletic are set to sign Preston North End goalkeeper Chris Maxwell on loan.

The Addicks saw their numbers depleted in that department when Jed Steer was recalled by Aston Villa. He had been enjoying an extended run in the side after initially providing back-up to Dillon Phillips.

Academy product Phillips has been in goal for the last two matches but the League One outfit are expected to increase competition and depth in that area by bringing in another shotstopper on a temporary basis.

Maxwell, 28, has fallen out of favour at North End and has not started a match since November – when he was sent off in a 1-1 draw at Ipswich Town.

He has been capped at youth level by Wales and began his career at Wrexham before a switch to Fleetwood Town after they won promotion to the Football League in 2012.

He has made over 350 career appearances.
