Charlton Athletic boss Lee Bowyer “flattered” by QPR link – but insists focus is solely on Addicks

BY RICHARD CAWLEY

Lee Bowyer has admitted he is “flattered” by reports linking him with the Queens Park Rangers vacancy.

Charlton Athletic have made a contract offer this week to their highly-regarded manager, who sees his current terms end in June.

It has been claimed that QPR have identified the 42-year-old as a possible replacement for Steve McClaren, who was dismissed on Tuesday.

“It’s flattering but I’m paid here,” said Bowyer. “My job is to get promotion. It’s all speculation.

“I’ve not spoken to anybody from QPR. I don’t know where it has come from.

“That’s what happens in football if you’re doing well – you get linked to other positions. If there is any truth behind it then it shows we are getting recognition for the good job we’re doing.

“It’s a good club, a big club. Obviously it’s flattering but I’m not getting carried away.

“All I’ve done since the start of the week is focus on Saturday’s game. That’s my job. That’s what I’m paid to do.

“There is no change in my eyes. So Tuesday I came in and we trained as normal, I went to watch the U23 game and then on the way home I was trying to prepare with Lieven [De Turck] and see the budget for our pre-season tour.

“Then I’ve been at home watching three of Plymouth’s games.”

Bowyer has been left a bit puzzled by Charlton’s offer.

“If I’m honest I don’t really understand it,” he said. “I think Richard Murray [director] will be in today [Thursday] to go through it.

“It’s a bit different to a normal contract that I’ve ever seen before.”
