Boroughs’ contrasting fortunes are revealed in security survey
Southwark and Lambeth are among the five worst London boroughs for muggings, according to new figures.
But Wandsworth, Lewisham and Greenwich are among the top half of the table for the safest places to live in the capital for robberies or snatches, according to the Office for National Statistics.
Southwark was hit by 378 muggings in October 2017 alone, making it the fourth-worst, they say.
And another 340 were reported in the same month in Lambeth.
But Greenwich had 108, making it the 11th-best borough, while Lewisham, with 109, was 12th-best and Wandsworth had 111, making it the 14th-best borough.
The worst area was Camden, which suffered 1,019 thefts of that kind. The safest borough, Sutton, had just 31.
The survey, carried out by locksmithservice.co.uk, shows robberies fell until March 2015 – but since then the numbers have soared.
The survey revealed that 83 per cent of the people believe women are more likely to be victims of robbery – but figures from the Office for National Statistics prove the opposite.
The overview of robbery and theft from the person for England and Wales states that whilst women are more likely to be victims of snatches – or theft from the person – men are more likely to be victims of robbery.
The locksmithservice.co.uk survey also revealed 59 per cent of people are not optimistic about the police being able to help in the case of a robbery or theft from the person.
