Be like me, get ready for Moonlight Walk, by breast cancer survivor Helen Townrow

Helen Townrow is preparing for The MoonWalk London on Saturday, May 11. Here is the first of her blogs on why she is taking part in the challenge which is organised by breast cancer charity, Walk the Walk:

It’s January, it’s cold, in fact it feels like it might snow, but it’s time to head out. Trainers on, scarf, hat and of course my lovely dog Badger to keep me company.

Official training for The MoonWalk London 2019 has begun!

I’m 43 years old and this will be my second MoonWalk London – my first one being last year with my gorgeous mother Alison who is a spritely 77 years old.

We are both walking because in December 2006 I was diagnosed with Stage 3 Breast Cancer which had advanced into my lymphatic system.

After amazing care at the Royal Marsden hospital (a full mastectomy, lymph node removal, chemotherapy and radiotherapy) I am truly lucky to be here and love making the most of every day of my life.

My whole family were a total rock to me and it was my mother’s idea we do The MoonWalk and we loved it!

My son was not quite a year old when I was diagnosed, he’s now 13 years old and I’m so unbelievably lucky to watch him grow and turn into the fabulous young man he is becoming.

I’m acutely aware that the gift of life I’ve been given is due to superb healthcare that is so intrinsically linked to fundraising and scientific advancements year on year.

Every pound funds research — literally that can, and does save lives.

That all said – it’s still January, it’s still cold and my house feels real warm and cosy…… come on Helen it’s time to get out and walk properly.

So I’m doing daily walks minimum of about 45 minutes but regularly I’ll go for over an hour.

Badger is loving it, I’m hoping for a tad more warmth but ooooh I feel virtuous after a walk and its really lovely walking with friends, or on my own.

So my advice is get those trainers on, look to the snowy skies and take a deep breath at the start of training as it’s a joy to be here.

If you think maybe you should give The MoonWalk a go – my advice is DO IT, you won’t regret it!

Entries are now open for The MoonWalk London on Saturday May 11. This year’s event has a fun theme of all things Disco!
Walkers will be grooving on down to the Disco vibe in Walk the Walk’s huge pink tent on Clapham Common before setting off on their Half Moon or Full Moon challenge at Midnight.
