Battersea Ironsides are in contention to win ‘Rugby Club of the Season’ – the prize being a training session with Harlequins’ star players.
Insurance broker Gallagher, who are a title partner of Premiership Rugby, have put them on a shortlist of six clubs.
Battersea Ironsides have 1,200 juniors and more than 300 volunteers and rely on local authority parks and school playing fields in the Wandsworth area – they do not have a single rugby pitch of their own.
Through its involvement with charitable organisations, Ironsides members also use rugby-based intervention to work with prisons and young offender institutes across London and the South East.
Ironsides chair Rob Newman said: “Our mantra is ‘rugby for all’. We’re delighted that Gallagher has recognised the work we do to make the game more accessible.
“Our aim is to provide as many players as possible with a competitive standard of rugby, as well as the coaching and life skills they need to have an excellent chance of success outside of the sport.”
