AFC Dons interim boss reveals a major boost in their fight to secure first win of the season
Glyn Hodges says Anthony Wordsworth’s return to the first-team fold is a big boost – with the experienced midfielder scoring in Saturday’s 3-2 loss at Peterborough.
The 30-year-old, who has played more than 300 League One matches, had been out with an achilles tendon injury and is yet to start this season.
But Wordsworth came off the bench at The Weston Homes Stadium and produced a precision finish for Wimbledon’s second goal of the afternoon.
Glyn Hodges, in interim charge after manager Wally Downes was suspended last week, said: “We’ve missed Woody, he was the main player last year.
“He’s only just back now after being out since pre-season. It’s good to have him back and he made a difference, as Mitch [Pinnock] did. They linked up well together and with the centre forwards. There was a lot of good play from us in the second-half.
“When you are 2-0 down sometimes it’s quite easy to come out and have a go.
“I feared that if we didn’t, with the quality they had shown, they would cause us more problems, so we got on the ball.
“You look at the goals we conceded and they could easily have been avoided, which is the disappointing thing.
“With the calibre of the forwards they’ve got here, if you give them gifts or make mistakes they will punish you, which they did.
