The idea for the Big Knight Out was formed at a 50th birthday party for Barrie Knight and Gary Wallis, which was held at the Coronet theatre in the Elephant and Castle in July 2014.
The atmosphere was amazing, and one that Barrie was keen to recreate. So, together with some of his childhood friends, event organiser Tina Vernon, and brilliant underground DJ’s, Danny Walters, Tony Dabreu and Kenny Charles, Barrie set to work.
Word quickly spread, and the demand for tickets was huge, and on the October 21, 2016, the first Big Knight Out was held at the Coronet.
The venue was filled with people from the community and from across the country, with some guests flying in from abroad for the event.
The DJ’s raised the roof and had the crowd of 800 people up on their feet, dancing to the finest retro soul, funk and disco, till the small hours.
The atmosphere was electric, and something not witnessed by the Big Knight Out team since the days when disco was king. The night was a huge success and Barrie and the team were blown away by all the positive comments that were posted on their Facebook page – with many asking if it could be a yearly event.
On the strength of that success, the team started planning the second Big Knight Out, which takes place at the Coronet on Saturday, September 9, 2017.
What struck the team most of all were the positive comments regarding the genre of music that was played at last year’s event, with everyone in agreement that it was the best soul and disco that they’d heard in years.
To that end, the team are thrilled to have the legendary DJs Greg Edwards, Steve Jackson and John Osborne playing alongside Tony, Kenny and Danny at this year’s event. The team are excited about Big Knight Out 2, and are looking forward to seeing old friends and making new ones.
