The Tankard, a new venue from The Draft House pub group has opened in the heart of Kennington.
To celebrate the launch, the Draft House team are giving away 100 free pints throughout August. All customers need to do is relay a secret code passed on by an old regular…
In a nod to the comic actor and film star, Charlie Chaplin, who frequented the original site with his music hall performer father during his childhood, the first 100 new customers to say, ‘Charlie sent me’ to the barman, will receive a pint on the house.
The Victorian pub has been restored to its former glory following a refurbishment. Bringing together elements of Victoriana – from its music hall and silent film past – with modern day fixtures and fittings; this new Draft House is the perfect mix of old and new.
Upstairs, the pub’s Theatre Bar leads out onto a magnificent roof terrace overlooking Kennington Road. Decked out with festoon lighting and plenty of seating, this is the spot to be at this summer. What’s more, its pergola covering means customers can enjoy drinks al fresco all-year round.
The Tankard will feature an incredible line up of beers and spirits, including Victory Gin from the group’s distillery in Bermondsey. Guests can purchase take out beers from the bar, available in all formats from cans and bottles, and can even buy their own tankard to keep on display behind the bar which will be theirs to use each time they return.
Featuring a rotating list of artisanal cheeses from across the UK, the daily-changing menu recommends matching beers for each new cheese from the Tankard’s extraordinary selection of rare bottled beers.
The menu also boasts an impressive Sunday Roast line up, including Fore Rib of Beef, Pork Belly, Lemon & Herb Half Chicken and Portobello Mushroom, Feta & Walnut Wellington served with all the trimmings; the perfect end to any week.
Charlie McVeigh, founder and CEO of Draft House, said “The Tankard is an amazing pub shot through with the extraordinary history and culture of Kennington, which we’ve loved bringing to life. The joy of this pub is its magnificent roof terrace. This has to be one of THE spots to be in the summer – ideal for a quiet mid-week pint of pale, or to celebrate an important birthday at the weekend. We can’t wait to welcome customers down to the site with a free pint!”
