Basketball: London City Royal ready for BBL start after friendly win in Serbia

London City Royals finished their pre-season tour of Serbia on a high with a morale-boosting 84-61 victory over Partizan.

Matthew Bryan-Amaning exploded with 32 points as the newly-formed Crystal Palace-based club warmed up for Saturday’s British Basketball League opener at Bristol Flyers (Sep 22).

The impressive win followed losses to Dynamic and Zarkovo and coach Jay Williams said  he “couldn’t ask for anything more” from the trip.

“This pre-season has by far been the best pre-season I’ve ever been involved in,” said Williams. “Coming to Serbia where the competition has been very, very tough; all the players are of a very high standard.

“Matt had an amazing game against Partizan – 32 points and 11 rebounds. Orlan Jackman played like a warrior.

“He played 36 minutes and put up 12 points, 10 rebounds, three steals and two blocks – he was awesome on both ends of the floor, leading the charge.

“We knew everybody was determined and focused to make sure we came home with a win under our belts for the tour.

“We got better in our shooting as the week went on as things clicked offensively, we moved the ball a lot better too. Defensively it was a real team effort with a lot of second efforts.

“And the overall effort was just absolutely outstanding. I couldn’t have asked for more.”

The Royals made their home debut at the Crystal Palace National Sports Centre on September 29 against Surrey Scorchers (7.30pm).
