17,000 new jobs to be created at Battersea power station shopping centre
Designer shops, chain stores and a cinema are among the attractions which will open when Battersea power station becomes a shopping centre, creating 17,000 jobs.
High end retailers Hugo Boss, Jo Malone and MAC cosmetics will be joined by clothing chain Uniqlo and Watches of Switzerland, as well as World Heavyweight Champion Anthony Joshua’s boutique boxing gym, BXR, and Battersea Power House, a set of spaces for events.
Contracts have been exchanged or are under offer on another 45 per cent of retail and leisure space.
The event space will host cultural, fashion shows and music events for thousands of people.
A glass lift, which will travel up the inside of one of the power station’s iconic chimneys, is to become a viewing platform as it emerges out of the 109m summit.
Turbine hall A, which was built in the 1930s, will host premium brands, and turbine hall B, which was completed in the 1950s, will have a wider range of chains, with a total eventually of 100 outlets.
Archlight Cinema’s first movie house opened in Circus West Village last year.
About 70 per cent of the total commercial space within the power station is now let.
Simon Murphy, chief executive of the Battersea Power Station Development Company (BPSDC), said: “We are delighted to be partnering with these exciting brands, which set the tone for our retail and leisure offering inside the power station.
“On behalf of our Malaysian shareholders we are delivering a destination for our local community, as well as London and far beyond.
“We enter 2020 with a very strong pipeline of retail and leisure brands intending to make the power station their home, which we will announce over the course of the year as we begin counting down the days to the opening of this historic landmark in 2021.”
